-
Learn
Work through decks of phrases one card at a time. Front is the phrase, back is what it actually means and when people use it. Cards you keep missing come back around.
-
Submit
Heard something good? Made something up? Add it. Every phrase in Oddiom was written by someone who thought it was worth passing on.
-
Rate
Readers score each phrase. Good ones rise, filler sinks, and the best submitters end up on the leaderboard with their names next to their work.
What's in here
- IdiomsThe old reliable ones, plus the regional oddities.
- AnalogiesExplanations that make a hard thing suddenly obvious.
- CorporateThe language of meetings, decoded and mildly mocked.
- SlangCurrent, dated, local — tagged so you know which.
- OriginalsCoined by users. Nowhere else yet.
- WildcardsProverbs, insults, toasts, and things that fit nowhere.
The leaderboard
Every rating a phrase receives counts towards the person who submitted it. Contributors are ranked by the average score of their phrases, with a minimum number of ratings before anyone can chart — so one lucky card doesn't put you at the top. Rankings are public and update continuously.
Questions
- Does it cost anything?
- No. Submitting, learning and rating are all free.
- Who owns the phrases I submit?
- You keep what you wrote. You grant Oddiom permission to display it in the app and credit it to your username.
- What stops it filling up with nonsense?
- Ratings, mostly. Low-scoring cards stop being shown, and anything abusive or plagiarised can be reported and removed.
- Can I use it to learn English?
- Plenty of people do — idioms and slang are exactly the part that textbooks skip. Cards are tagged by region and register so you can tell a safe one from a risky one.
